Magic and How it Works
Magic is the combined powers of energies pulled from nature and the will power of the one casting the spell or talent. There will be what is known as 'common magic' which includes the ability to heal oneself from minor wounds or poisons, the ability to use cosmetic glamour, or telekinesis on smaller objects [think along the lines of hair brush sized] and the ability to light candles or lanterns with a mere flick of the wrist if they know the fire-spell for it. High elves, wood elves, the corrupted, and half-breeds are all capable of using common magic. However, humans do not possess any form of magic in the world we’ve created. All players that wish to wield magic must stay within those four species.

Magic is not infinite and thus overuse can weaken an elf until it is regenerated. Too much of this within a short period of time can result in death. This is also why there is a limitation on exactly what can be healed. You cannot bring someone back from an inevitable death without sacrificing your own life. As, it would take everything within the healer to accomplish it. The older an individual is, the larger their resource pool. However, no user should be creating mountain ranges with earth manipulation or causing eternal night across the lands of Caladarn with darkness manipulation. Attempting such an over the top feat would result in both failure and death for the spell caster. Be creative, but also use common sense. If you have a question about whether or not something is over the top? Feel free to ask. Otherwise? Have fun with it.

Note: Finding an alternative method of regenerating/powering your magic outside the Corrupted is not possible. Whether it is by the use of captured souls via soul gems or by the blood of others: all would be dabbling into darker arts thus a corruptive force.

Layout of the World

Currently, the world of Cerilin will be focusing on the kingdoms of Caladarn and Alaelith. Anything beyond these areas will not come into play. Likewise, we would prefer if players did not create random lands beyond this without our permission. As of now, Alaelith’s territory names reflect their human origin. Despite the passage of time for mortals, these names still would have been known by the elves. They would know where all these things resided, thus the current occupants have kept all of the names while building upon those areas. For more information on each kingdom, please see the world section of our game.

Religion
The people of Cerilin typically believe in two deities: goddess Celair and the god Gwarthon. They are complete opposites, though each is seen as creator gods. They are twins that formed the world together. However, Celair was always the strongest and most influential of the two, which caused Gwarthon’s heart to darken with envy. Hoping to become her equal, he sought out methods that delved into questionable territory. In time, Gwarthon experimented: creating abominations in an attempt to one-up his sister. When that wasn’t enough? He grew angry, inevitably releasing those creations upon the world they'd crafted together. This terrorized the peaceful beings that dwelled within Cerilin. It was when he began experimenting on those that Celair favored that swift action was taken. Sealed away with his atrocities and placed into an eternal slumber, Gwarthon was thought to be incapacitated. And, for ages, he was: until that magic began to break its hold over his mind. Unable to free himself and lacking the ability to use most of his powers: with the exception of one. He could not directly influence the world, but he could sway those that dwelled within it. Reaching into their minds and guiding them on a particular path. Teaching them skills, various arts: dark magic. In time, that corrupting influence on the world seemed to strengthen him and loosen those bonds further. The day will eventually come when he finds himself freed: though that is a long way away. None in Caladarn look forward to this possibility and all are wary. It serves as a warning against dabbling in the darker aspects of the world. You never know what you might summon: or whose attention you might catch.

Celair is the positive force upon the world. She is the one that all worship, with the exception of Alaelith. There, most worship Gwarthon – who they believe to be the true deity; the one that was betrayed by his sister. An entity that teaches them self-empowerment and ‘fights against the one that would deny them knowledge and power that would benefit society’.

Marriage and Bonding
Love is sacred amongst all of the species of Cerilin. Likewise, each species has its own traditions in regards to courtship and marriage. Regardless of how the union comes to be, love is love – regardless of gender. However, most tend to marry amongst their own species.

  • High Elves: Marriages aren’t always about love: amongst the upper class they are typically arranged. Sometimes love might come from such a union, but more often than not it is about politics and breeding. A pure lineage is something to maintain amongst the higher ranks. High elven parents also take into account magical abilities: especially if they desire a certain aspect over another. There are those that stray from this norm, especially if a suitable partner cannot be found. However, this is not something that is encouraged.

There is more freedom amongst the lower class – where marriage is all about a show of love. Given the immortal status of elves, courtship can last several hundred years. Time holds little meaning, though real life complications can cause a union to be rushed.

Marriage ceremonies are a joyous event. Whether it be an extravagant affair with the upper class or a simple gathering amongst the lower class: the basics remain the same – it’s a handfasting ceremony. High elves of all social standing do not believe in going outside the marriage. Such a thing is deeply frowned upon, though it does happen from time to time. When it occurs, it is typically amongst those willing to take the risk and hide it well. Given the restrictive ways of the upper class, they are usually the guilty ones.

  • The Corrupted: not mine.

  • The Stages of Fading
For the high elves and wood elves, Fading is a serious condition which can be triggered by certain sorrows in life which an individual can't overcome. While there are three stages to this process, the third is the only stage which one cannot find recovery from. Once an individual is in this last stage, there is no turning back.

Stage One: There is a small loss of color to the skin and hair of the subject. They are less prone to react to things that typically make them happy, and they tend to be ready to distance themselves from those they love. This stage can often go unnoticed to most elves, unless they are remarkably observant of others.

Stage Two: Loss of color increases, soon to include the eyes. This is the longest stage of fading, and can last between a matter of days to months. In some cases with an anchoring cause, a subject might remain in this 'between stage' for years, even centuries - though it is often only so long as they feel they are needed. Individuals are far less prone to interact on any social levels, unless forced to attend upon friends or loved ones - or others force their presence upon the subject.

Stage Three: The subject is more ghostly than anything else, bordering on being seen as ethereal and transparent. While there will occasionally be glimmers of their old personality, the subject will typically be so absent that there are no emotional responses in the least. This is the stage of death, one which cannot be recovered from. Within days, the individual will vanish; as if they'd been erased, with no proof of their existence aside from the memories and belongings they leave behind.

    Taboos
Like with all cultures, there are taboos to be found within the various communities that make up Cerilin. Though some are more passionate about these morals than others, there are a few which stand out as being so impacting that they cannot be ignored.

  • High Elves: High elves are notorious about their selective breeding habits. Half-breeds exist, though they are not plentiful and are often a source of shame for the elven parent. Lower class individuals typically keep their own half-breeds, but the upper class is another story entirely. They will often give them away for others to raise, removing any claim of their own to the child. Some are more caring than others – despite the need to save face. Those individuals will often provide for their children in secret, allowing them to have a comfortable existence. At least, what could be considered comfortable for a being that is rejected and considered shameful by the elven parent.

Sexual relations with wood elves aren’t socially desirable, but acceptable. Having relations with a human is deeply frowned upon. Given their lack of magic as well as their brief lifespan? Such a union would be destined for failure. If the elf becomes particularly attached to the mortal? There is an increased chance of them fading due to sorrow after their inevitable passing. As with all things that are discouraged, there are those with a particular fetish for the races outside their kin. However, the Corrupted do not factor into any of this. A high elf wouldn’t touch them in that manner. Those that would? Likely would be influenced by them in some capacity, thus setting themselves up for corruption. Regardless, sometimes love simply happens – and high elves are just as susceptible to falling for a human or wood elf. As long as it is hidden from the public eye? Anything is possible. Upper class individuals are more likely to be shunned, though they are also the ones with more resources to hide their endeavors.
