High Elves
As the founders of Caladarn, high elves dominate all levels of society. Despite the existence of other species within the kingdom, they remain the majority of the upper class. Very few beings outside of their kin have managed to raise themselves to the same social standing. As such, the high elves maintain claim over the land, viewing others dwelling amongst them as charity on their part. Mainly due to the fact that they do view other species as lesser. To them, this is a mere fact and something that can’t be helped. Possessing immortality as well as high intelligence and their mastery of magic, their superiority complex is matched by their natural abilities.

Culturally complicated, high elves have a very deep sense of decorum and politeness where others of their species are involved. 'Polite society' is very much a truth for them, with very little room for slips of manners. Severe slights are settled with magical duels, the winners proving their right in the matter. Many times, such duels have led to rifts in a specific Elven clan or society - splitting their community while one group follows the humiliated loser. Politics and warfare have always been keystones to the society of the high elves; their young being educated in both until the individual takes a shining to one or the other. While they do have artisans of their own, they are often acknowledged in their crafts after they've made a name for themselves in battle or political scheming. Gender tends to be disregarded - merely a matter of this or that and will not bar an individual from any life choice.

  • Tall and graceful; the flow of time is meaningless to them. A hundred years can feel like a blink of an eye. This is why marrying mortals is often discouraged. To become too emotionally attached to something that is gone in the blink of an eye would only lead to suffering – and possibly fading. That doesn’t mean that it never happens, it does: as one can’t help what the heart wants.

  • Half-breeds are frowned upon amongst the high elves. Partially due to arrogance, though there is some legitimacy behind discouraging the mixing of species. Not only does it create weaker offspring, but such a child would be socially rejected amongst the high elves.

  • All high elves possess immortality, common magic, as well as healing magic and force-field generation. They also possess agility as well as advanced hearing and sight. Likewise, high elves do not grow facial hair and possess pointed ears.

  • On top of their basic abilities, elves also have the option of being born with solar, earth, or water manipulation. The ability is carried within their lineage and is not by any means random. If one parent has solar and another has earth, there is a 50/50 chance of which ability their children will possess.

  • High elves age normally up until their early to mid-twenties. After this, they cease physically aging. There are exceptions to this rule: a stressful life can lead to them aging further. Despite this, high elves are not considered true adults until they reach the age of 100.

  • High elves sleep considerably less than most species found in the world; however, they do have to occasionally rest. Typically, their day can consist of four days before they find themselves beginning to tire. Many sleep for a day and a half throughout a seven-day week.

  • The nobility and royalty possess elaborate elven burial crypts; each house is in charge of maintaining their own. Often times loyal servants receive burial spaces amongst the nobles they serve. All other high elves are given a basic burial, typically returned to the earth with no grave marker.

  • High elves possess a low fertility rate and typically have no more than four children. More than that is completely unheard of amongst their kind.

  • The Corrupted
They were once proud members of the high elven race, now they are a mere shadow of their former selves. Twisted and corrupted, their appearances can range anywhere from warped beauty to horrific monstrosities. It is all a reflection of their true, inner being. While they share their high elven counterpart’s opinion on marrying outside their own: they are far more open-minded when it comes to other things. They do not believe in holding back their potential: regardless of what darker territory it takes them. And, above all else? The corrupted are highly emotional: their polluted state prevents them from fading. Whether that is a blessing or a punishment is up for debate. They do not have to worry about ceasing to be due to sorrow: they are also forced to live with their trauma.

Exceptionally hard to kill, they do not require food – their existence is seemingly fueled by the dark forces that tainted them. As far as their society goes: much of their social structure and politics mirror the Caladarn; minus some of the restrictions. Overall, they are a distorted mirror of their high elven counterparts. A shadowed version, something bordering a mockery of that light. Despite that outward appearance: they are far more forgiving than their light equivalent. Where their former kin would likely let someone rot to save face, the corrupted are more likely to reach out to them. Overall, the gnarled outward appearance and dark deeds serve to conceal the fact that they are more likely to embrace emotional extremes than their enemy. Whether those feelings are positive or negative at that moment.

  • The corrupted come in a variety of different appearances. They started off as largely high elven in origin, though wood elves are just as likely to be corrupted. As of now, there are a sizable amount of tainted wood elves amongst them.

  • All corrupted possess immortality, common magic, as well as Necromancy and blood magic. They also possess agility as well as advanced hearing and sight. They do not differ on this, regardless of what their original species might have been.

  • The corrupted do procreate; their pregnancy cycle is the same as their elven counterparts. Likewise, they are unable to create half-breeds. Their tainted nature will now allow it to occur. An elf would never dream of mating with something corrupt. Those that would consider it are likely on the verge of joining the dark court themselves. Humans are not viable to breed with; no attempt between the two would ever result in anything taking root.

  • On top of their basic abilities, the corrupted also have the option of being born with darkness, ice, or fire manipulation. The ability is carried within their lineage and is not by any means random. If one parent has darkness and another has ice, there is a 50/50 chance of which ability their children will possess. However, if an elf is newly corrupted, the ability they gain is something of a gamble. As of now, no one really knows how such a thing is determined.

  • When it comes to sleep: their biological needs are the same as the high elves. However, their desire to sleep typically leans towards a nightly basis. More of an addiction, their desperation to connect to the dark whispers of their God outweighs other concerns. Hoping above all else that they will be gifted with words of wisdom, advice, or even demands. When they do not sleep regularly, their frustration is visible. How that plays out is entirely up to the individual’s personality.

  • The corrupted age normally up until their early to mid-twenties. After this, they cease physically aging. There are exceptions to this rule: a stressful life can lead to them aging further. Despite this, they are not considered true adults until they reach the age of 100.

  • Like their high elven counterparts, the corrupted possess a low fertility rate. They typically have no more than four children; more than that is completely unheard of amongst their kind.

  • Neither morals nor fear of consequences holds them back from gaining more power. Thus, with a spell and a magical gem in hand: they are capable of soul trapping living creatures. The actual creature can range from a rabbit to a human. The soul gems come in different sizes: a human soul requiring the largest available. They can use these to power their magic, thus giving an alternative to using their own magic pool.

    Half-Breeds
When offspring is born from human and elven parents, the result is known as a half-breed. Half-breeds are rare in existance and highly frowned upon by elven society. Often rejected by high elves, you won't see half-breeds attain any royal status or noble inheritance.

    Appearance
Half-breeds bear physical characteristics from either parent, making them distinguishable from both human and elven society. A half-breed may appear human but stand at a grand height of an elf. A half-breed may have pointed ears and a stall stature, but unlike the elves, have facial hair.

    Lifespan
While half-breeds are long-lived, they are not immortal. The general lifespan of a human/elf half-breed is 700-800 years. They age in appearance much slower than a mortal and cease in their physical transformation at age 50, bearing the appearance of a human in their mid-twenties. 50 is also the age of adulthood.

    Abilities & Strength
  • While stronger and more advanced in their makeup than mere mortals, half-breeds are still significantly weaker when compared to elves. Their magic, abilities, and overall strength are inferior to elves, but can easily overtake humans in the face of an attack.

  • Even though elves do not require much sleep, half-breeds require more rest, although not as much as a human. Half-breeds can go nearly 2 days before needing to rest. Going any longer can be detrimental to their health.

  • While their elven half encourages a quicker rate of healing, their human half makes half-breeds susceptible to common illnesses. Their advanced healing would shorten the duration off the illness, and might also lessen the severity of it, but they are not immune to any diseases.

  • They heal quicker than humans and slower than elves.

  • Half-breeds are born with either common magic or an ability. They are never born with both.

  • If they are born with an ability, their ability would reflect that of their parent. EX: If their elven parent was born with solar manipulation, the half-breed would also have an ability relating to solar manipulation.

    Pregnancies
  • Because they are part human, half-breeds are more fertile than elves. They are able to produce offspring more common than the elves but, because they are also part elf, less common than a human. Pregnancies last 7 months.

  • What the offspring would bear in its makeup depends on the genetic background of its parents.

  • A half-breed mating with an elf would bear the majority of elven blood, meaning the offspring would likely be pure elf. In this case, the offspring would have immortality, common magic, and an ability.

  • A half breed mating with a human would bear the majority of human blood, meaning the offspring would likely be human. In this case, their offspring would have no expanded lifespan, magic, or abilities.

  • If two half-breeds mate, there is a 50/50 chance of the child being half-breed or human, but never solely elf. They would have a 50/50 chance of having common magic or an ability, but never both. While their lifespan would be longer than a mortal's, their lifespan would be significantly less than that of a first generation half-breed. The offspring of two half-breeds lives to be around 300, also reaching adulthood around age 50.

Note: this section refers to human/elf half-breeds. Any child born of a high elf/wood elf coupling would be either a high elf or a wood elf, not both. The chances are around 50/50 for either outcome.
